Research Interests
Dr. Jakeman has been at Dalhousie University since August 2001. His research interests lie with the application of novel chemical and molecular techniques for the construction of new chemical entities, primarily focused upon carbohydrates. The techniques include synthetic chemistry, protein engineering and biosynthetic pathway engineering. Molecules produced may have potential anticancer or antibiotic activity and are assayed through collaborators at Dalhousie and elsewhere. His research teaching includes graduate course PHAR6080.03 titled 'Chemical Biology' in the Masters of Pharmaceutical Sciences program and advanced CHEM 6000 level modules in the Chemistry MSc and PhD programs. At the undergraduate level, he teaches medicinal chemistry to Pharmacy students in their second, third and fourth years of study.
He is originally from the United Kingdom where he received his BSc and PhD degrees at the University of Sheffield in bioorganic chemistry working for G. Michael Blackburn and Michael P. Williamson. He then moved to Washington State University in the USA, and worked on enzyme mechanisms with Dr. Jeremy N. S. Evans and subsequently moved to the University of British Columbia where he developed an appreciation for carbohydrate enzymology with Dr. Stephen G. Withers prior to arriving at Dalhousie in August 2001.
Dr. Jakeman is currently reviewing applications from new graduate students. If you are interested in the MSc or PhD (Chemistry) programs, please contact Giselle Andrews (giselle.andrews@dal.ca), the Chemistry graduate studies secretary. If you are interested in the MSc (Pharmaceutical Sciences) program, please contact Tracy Jollymore (tracy.jollymore@dal.ca), the Pharmacy graduate studies secretary.
